The Barranco Clinic has been serving the needs of patients and referring physicians in the Central Florida area for over forty years.
Dr. J. “Sam” Barranco opened his solo practice in 1970 on Avenue K in Winter Haven. His vision grew over the years to include six board certified otolaryngology physicians, Deane R. Briggs. Michael J. Rooney, George D. Lyle, C. Ron Brooker, Robert M. Merritt and Joseph J. Bradfield, and one physicians assistant, Teresita Weinberg. His idea was to offer exceptional and convenient ear nose and throat care to patients in all of Central Florida. From his one office we have grown to include six offices in three counties; Polk, Highlands and Lake.
The practice includes a CT scanner for complete Otolaryngological and Head and Neck evaluations. Our physicians are trained in sleep disorder diagnosis and treatment. Additional services include an allergy department staff trained using the American Board of Allergy recommendations for inhalant and food allergies. We also offer the innovative sublingual allergy therapy. Patients and referring physicians also have the benefit of our complete hearing evaluations including ABR, VNG, vestibular testing and dizzy assessments. We offer a full line of high quality hearing aids and follow up care with three Doctors of Audiology, Thomas Bunn, Elyse Ewig and Patricia Dawson.
Salvadore J. “Sam” Barranco, M.D.
The Barranco Clinic’s founder, Salvadore J. “Sam” Barranco, M.D., was a dedicated physician who exhibited great compassion for his family, patients, employees and community.
Dr. Barranco was born in Lake Wales, Florida on March 6, 1938, to Dr. Anthony Joseph and Fannie DeJohn Barranco. His father was an accomplished family doctor and surgeon who served the Lake Wales Community for many years. He founded the Lake Wales Little League and the Lake Wales baseball field bears the Barranco family name and honors their service to the people of Lake Wales.
Dr. Barranco received his Bachelor of Science at the University of Alabama in 1959. During that time he played football under Coach Bear Bryant. He received his Doctor of Medicine at Tulane University in 1963 and completed his residency in Otolaryngology at Tulane in 1970. From 1963-1964 he served the U.S. Navy as general medical officer. He started his Otolaryngology practice In Winter Haven in 1970 as the only Bard Certified Otolaryngologist in the community.
His first office was located in the medical complex at 400 Ave K, S.E. For the next six years his solo practice flourished. Because he was so dedicated to his patients, he remained on call and kept his office open with little time off until 1976 when his first partner, Dr. Deane R. Briggs, joined the practice. Shortly thereafter, in 1978, the office was moved to a much larger location at 160 E. Lake Howard Dr., where the main Barranco Clinic office remains today. Dr. Barranco chose this beautiful location on Lake Howard for this office and was instrumental in preserving the historic 100 year old camphor tree located at the entrance.
For the next thirty years, Dr. Barranco brought into the practice accomplished, board certified Ear, Nose and Throat physicians. The practice name changed with each new doctor from Barranco and Briggs, M.D., P.A. to Barranco, Briggs, and Rooney, M.D., P.A. and finally to Barranco, Briggs, Rooney and Lyle, M.D., P.A. before being changed to The Barranco Clinic shortly before Dr. Barranco’s death in 1999. By 1985 his visions led to the expansion of the practice from just Winter Haven to other central Florida locations with offices in Sebring, Lake Wales, Haines City Bartow and Lakeland.
Dr. Barranco married Joy Mansour of Newnan, Georgia in June 1964. They had four children; Lisa, Nicole, Sam and Chris. Joy was a constant inspiration in Dr. Barranco’s life as Administrator of the practice until her retirement in 1996.
